It really comes down to how much you value your time, as with my Steel Bars example it's still about 10+hrs you'd have to grind it for a single bond, versus an hour or less depending on your minimum wage for a month of membership. Smithing isn't the most useful skill but you'll still need it fairly high for quests and diaries when you plan to do those.
I did that for early moneymaking, though I also wasn't buying bonds. Steel bars at the Blast Furnace is fairly low level that you get access to it and can make a decent amount of cash while still levelling up Smithing in the process. I'll link the wiki's list of rough estimates below, depends heavily on current prices: Low level moneymakers can often come with the caveat of not making much progress on your account with low or no exp methods. Sustaining yourself on bonds is feasible but earlier on the money will probably be far more important for progression. If you already know that you enjoy the game and want to experience p2p, the best time to get membership is immediately from the moment you create your account. This game is so massive, it can be kind of nice to be confined to that little F2P chunk of the game while you get settled in. You can afford to waste a little time at the start of the game if you think it would be fun for you, no need to rush in to efficiencyscape.

It was very nostalgic and it was free up until I decided I would recommit to a game that had lost its way last I heard (eoc). It's unarguably less efficient, but I had a great time. When I started OS I set a goal for myself before I could buy membership: complete all F2P quests. If you're more concerned with experiencing Runescape (as a totally new player or a returning RS2 player) than you are with being efficient then I recommend holding off for a bit.
